This amiable farce about a bumbling schoolbus driver who is mistaken
for a Mafia leader enjoyed at one time the distinction of being
the highest-grossing film in Italian history. Director, cowriter
and star Benigni is the centerpiece of the hilarious tale in which
the hopelessly inept Dante (Benigni) is lured to Palermo by the
wife of notorious mobster Johnny Stecchino (Benigni again) to be
used as his double. Of course, Dante is completely unaware of the
deception, which leads him into a hilarious series of misadventures
with rival gang members and the police. As an actor, Benigni's comic
schtick is almost flawless, while as a director his timing is occasionally
suspect. Still, the humor builds throughout reaching a fever pitch
by film's end and leaving those in need of good comedy well sated.
